This is a song about a cowboy who is telling the world being a cowboy isn’t easy. Its apparent his angst is against “city slickers”, stating the only horses they ever rode were the ones that had a slot for a quarter. The cowboy goes on and explains that cowboys work hard from dawn to dusk while riding on the back of a horse all day. He also relates that cowboys know how to brand and occasionally have to protect their cattle from hungry animals, like wolves. Its a funny song with bits of truth.
As a former wrangler in Colorado, I spent many a day on horseback and enjoyed and miss the simplicity of working with horses and the good feeling you have from doing an honest hard days work outdoors. Plus, I saw a few guys who thought riding a horse was no big deal….that is till the horse decided they’d had enough. Or the other scenario when someone tells you they are an experienced rider only to find out they’re full of crap and then get knocked off the horse. Horses know in about 3 seconds if the rider knows what they’re doing or not…..and they have little tolerance for frauds.
I enjoyed writing this song a lot.
