This is a song about a Chinese woman in love with an American sailor. He has to return to his ship and sails off leaving her for an extended period of time. She doesn't know if she'll see him again or not. The narrator in the song that sees her tears and fears is either her soul or God. She spends time looking out over the horizon hoping to see his ship return with no result. She realizes he may never return and that there is more to life than the love of one man. But still she hopes for his return regardless. Then one night she sees a shadow in the dark, only to realize her lover has returned. It's a love story.
