This is a song about a single mother who lived in Mexico. The song tells us its a lawless land, meaning she had been subjected to crimes against her or she had seen too often crimes that went unpunished. She decides to leave the country with her son and travel miles toward the border. On her journey of hopes for a better life she is raped. She tells herself its the price she had to pay for the chance to have a better life for her son and herself. The story unfolds to another night when she is attacked again by 10 mean and is raped again. No one offers her help or comfort. She holds back her tears and just endures the pain and humiliation for the sake of her son. Finally she reaches the borders edge and crosses over and bursts into tears, knowing her tortured nights are over. But soon she and her son are forced to sleep on the streets and she wonders if it was the right thing to do, since now she has no home. At least in Mexico they had a roof over their heads. The song asks, where does she go for help when there isn’t anyone she knows? And finally, “Was she wrong to hope for a better life?” The song leaves us with a question that is difficult to answer. If you think she was wrong, it leaves you with the thought that it’s a heartless and cruel sentiment to have. If you think she was right, it leaves you with the argument of why didn’t she do it legally and/or, we can’t take everyone who tells us they want a better life. You can’t know who is telling the truth and who is lying just to get in. The truth is this, its not a simple answer.
Lastly, I don’t believe illegal crossing into our country is right. But I started to think about the possibility of a single mother who was desperate enough to trek across miles of rugged terrain and willing to subject herself to being raped repeatedly in order to escape a bad life in hopes of finding a better life for herself and her son. Plus, once getting here, realizing she didn’t stop to think of how hard it would be to survive. The story was so compelling to me, I had to write it. It’s a story of hope, horror and regret. I tried to put myself in this woman’s shoes and it left me feeling very sad; it left me with a question I couldn’t answer.
Such a sad song…it brought tears to my eyes. Well done.
I love the story and the way it progresses. It grabs your heart and makes you think about the hardship some of these people went through to get here. I was greatly moved.
The story is well written and the style is authentic and moving.
I do so love this minor feel! Sets a great mood! I love the story and the way it progresses.
Personally, I don’t believe illegal entry is right. But I hate to admit, this song brought tears to my eyes. The thought that a woman desperate to leave Mexico forced to be subjected to such horrible torture was very hard to see in my imagination. Your story was heartbreaking. It’s a beautiful song and quite eye opening. Again, I was greatly moved by it.
