This is a song of a homeless man who drifts from town to town.  He is broken hearted and disillusioned about love and his life.  He ‘s depressed and feels there is no redemption for him from his misdeeds and/or choices.  A woman in his past had left him deeply hurt and lost.  He roams from town to town to hide from his pain in the desert or forest.  He has no use for friends or people in general.  He is a poster child for a depressed man who’s guilt torments him daily.  He is a shadow of what he could and should be.  His life is loveless and lonely.  He is starving for love, forgiveness and understanding, but cannot forgive himself.  His only escape is a bottle or the road where he keeps hoping he can somehow outrun his past, even though he knows he can’t run away or escape himself.  He knows its futile but he is like a mouse on a wheel inside a cage.

He is a musical image of so many homeless people we see so often.   I’ve seen this too often from soldiers who are guilt ridden or tormented because of what they’ve seen or done in war.  He, like others, keep fighting their demons that haunt them through their memories.

At one point he stands in the rain hoping the rain will wash away his sins, his guilt and his demons….as if they were like the dirt on his hands that can be removed by soap and water.  His pain is real and he bears and carries his pain day after day; similar as how Jesus was subjected with immense pain from being tortured but was forced to still bear and carry his cross.
