This is a song about an unforgivable betrayal. It starts out with a father remembering the gift of a child God gave to him and his wife. He reminisces how his young daughter would pretend to be asleep in the back seat of their car arriving home or on the downstairs couch after watching a program. So then he would pick her up in his arms and carry her upstairs to her bed. But as soon as she was laid down she burst out laughing and gives him a loving hug. Then before he leaves, she gives him a butterfly kiss, as her father bids her goodnight.
The tragedy is that she’s grown up and over the years of her marriage her husband has continued to water a seed of lies over time to destroy her love and devotion for her father. Overtime the brainwashing has convinced her that her father’s love was abusive and his kindness was just a lie only to make himself look good.
Her father is devastated to say the least. A man who adored his daughter and loved her deeply as any normal father would. He knew it was her husbands lies that finally crushed her love for her dad. Her father is baffled how he could have accomplished such an evil act; …how could she abandon all those years of love and attention. Why couldn’t she see through his disguise of lies?
Her father knew from early on her husband was trying to create a divide between his wife and her father. In her father’s eyes, this was an unforgiveable and evil betrayal, as her father states….”What kind of man would twist the love from her dad to ensure he was the only man she could love.”
And yes, this is a true story and I’m the father and I never would have believed this would happen. I can’t find words to express the magnitude of betrayal and disappointment it brought. It was extremely devastating. You’re left between devastation and disbelief.
