This is a song about a cowboy who is telling the world its not easy to be a cowboy, while mocking “city slickers”, stating the only horses they ever rode were the ones that had a slot for a quarter. The cowboy goes on and explains that cowboys work from dawn to dusk while riding on the back of a horse. He also relates that cowboys know how to brand and occasionally have to protect their cattle from hungry animals, like wolves. Its a funny song with bits of truth.
As a former wrangler in Colorado myself, I spent many a day on horseback and enjoyed and miss the simplicity of working with horses and the good feeling you have from doing an honest hard days work outdoors. Plus, I saw a few guys who thought riding a horse was no big deal….that is till the horse decided they’d had enough. I enjoyed writing this song a lot.
