This song is from the perspective and viewpoint of the wounded soldier knowing he is dying. He isn’t thinking about politics, his investments, baseball, or other sports, etc. His only thoughts were about the ones he is about to never see, love or spend time with again; never to touch his wife or children again. It hopefully reminds us of the enormous sacrifice military men and women, AND their families and loved ones made when they had to give up their lives. None of them wanted to do so, but they did anyway. They left their wives or husbands and their kids behind alone. So often we hear speeches of their sacrifice but rarely is it ever mentioned about the hardships and burdens of the families that have to go on without them. I wanted to remind us that a dying soldiers last thoughts were surely about those he loved and knowing they were never going to see or love them again.
